On the morning of August 14, 2021, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook the country of Haiti causing substantial destruction. So far, over 2,000 people are confirmed dead, though the actual number from the quake and aftershocks is still not completely clear.
The quake struck Haiti’s Tiburon Peninsula, which encompasses much of the country’s southern coast. This area was still recovering from the 2016 Cat- 4 Hurricane Matthew. Adding to this, on August 17, Tropical Depression Grace reached Haiti bringing with it large amounts of rain and exacerbating the crisis.
There are four Nazarene districts near the epicenter of the earthquake, two are known to have sustained substantial damage and one that has not yet been able to make an official report. At least four churches were destroyed in a southern district and more than 10 houses have been destroyed. Among the dead are some Nazarene families; there are others who are critically hospitalized. Churches in this area are profoundly touched and this includes the areas of Les Cayes, Leprete, Pestel, Manich, and Jeremie.
While it may take several weeks to get a full picture, the humanitarian and financial need at this time is urgent. Families are in immediate need. At least one Nazarene district has reported an immediate need for shelter.
How You Can Help
Pray, partner with us, and give.
Please pray for those dealing with the havoc caused by the earthquake, especially those who have lost loved ones, jobs, homes and other resources. Pray for those who are still experiencing trauma from the 7.0 magnitude 2010 earthquake. Pray for the vulnerable, including children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the impoverished. Pray for church leaders in the area, the local churches responding to the needs around them, and those leading the country.
